Technicality of Gaps in Contact Races

The interpretation of gaps in long contact races, where the trailer holds the 5 or 4-pt, raises several arguments for and against the adjustment of gaps.

The issue of interpretation is relative to each specific instance, but I am interested in learning your views, opinions and arguments regarding the position above.
