To have a legal play corrected is not appropriate, in my opinion.

I agree. There's nothing in the rules that even allow him to do so. I think he was trying to be a good guy, which is to be applauded... unfortunately, the rules were broken in doing so.

It's pretty basic... say I make a legal, but moronic move, and pick up my dice. My gracious opponent tells me to go ahead and play it legally. Me, trying to out-gracious my opponent, refuse to do so. Now we're not being gracious -- the director is called. How do you rule? You can't possibly rule any way other than my play was legal, and it must stand.
