With 20/20 hindsight, I think we can see that if he hits an indirect shot he'll still have two blots exposed, so leaving indirect shots - even a lot of them - is sound, while leaving a direct shot gives him the chance to clean up one or both his homeboard blots. Playing aggressively with two blots in the homeboard is the right idea, but the way to do it is with diversifying numbers in the outfield, not slotting the 5.

Good problem, and obvious once you see it. Bold play is correct, but only the right kind of bold play.
