I agree with Bill here.

Clearly it demonstrates class and good sportsmanship to be willing to not penalize an opponent for an honest mistake. I commend Arda for clearly feeling a desire to with "the right way" and being a great sportsman. However, Bill hits the nail on the head that you have to draw the line somewhere, and legal play vs. illegal play is the logical place. The rules quite simply do not permit an opponent the option to allow a player making a bad but legal play to change their play. So much as one might want to, it is not allowed.

It also shows class and good sportsmanship for a player who has made a boneheaded but legal play to insist that their awful play stand in accordance with the rules, no matter how generous their opponent might offer to be. As Bill mentioned in another post recently, the exact same situation happened to me this year in a match against him. I simply laughed at my clear oversight and took personal responsibility for it. I expected no mercy, and had any been offered, I would not have accepted it.
