For this particular example if it arose in live play there would be no reason for you to break the rules by forcing your opponent to replay a legal roll. A workaround is easy enough, you roll, you pick up your dice. Oops, forgot to bear off my checker, guess your opponent can let your illegal play stand and take the victory. This workaround works for a lot of situations if your sole purpose is not to break the rules. Even the original problem in this thread could have worked around correcting a legal play.
