Following rules does not necessarily end in the most moral decision

I think that there are two factors that make this situation different from the one that started the thread.

The most important one is that in the case of the bearoff position, it is clear that the play actually made was not the play that the player actually intended to make. It seems clear that he either hit the wrong button to reverse the order of the dice, or accidentally dragged the checker to the wrong spot. That is very different from a player choosing a bad play, then making it, and then realizing there was something he failed to notice (like a checker on the bar) after the dice are up.

Secondly, it is rather common practice in live play that when in a non-contact bear-off and a player's roll is clearly sufficient to remove the remaining checkers and win the game, that the players simply acknowledge "game over" and start the next game. Had my opponent rolled 63 here, I cannot imagine anyone pointing out that he failed to bear off the checker from the ace point. The game was over the moment 63 popped out of the cup as far as I or anyone should be concerned. While not strictly in accordance with the written rules, I'd say that it is sufficiently common practice amongst players of all levels that no director should uphold such a claim if someone had the audacity to make it.
