You're right that he must have meant 52S instead of 52D.

However, my guess is that by "32R-D" he meant "32RD" (Run + Down), and that the cube is supposed to be in the center, as diagrammed.

In other words, I believe Merrigan's intended sequence is 52S-63S-31P-32Z-61P-44, as listed in the header and caption of this post.
