I would figure this problem out by the numbers as John already has but one should know going in that this type of position is a pass when the checker is 7 pips away, sometimes a pass when it's 8 pips away, and usually a take when it's 9 pips or more away. (that is getting one checker home versus one other blot which is much more common like the position shown below of which you could create many more & better variations) This has many other factors to weigh in which is why I would take John's approach when the problem can be broken down so easily.
