Maybe backgammon and golf should not be compared, but, as you mentioned, golf is often played with a handicap, to make tournaments and matches more challenging. Large entry-fee handicap tournaments are held in most countries. Handicaps are designed to not quite compensate the poorer golfer for the difference in skill between he and a scratch golfer. Often a handicap tournament is won by the golfer that is very hot that day. One of the weaker players in field can win on any given day. It can be a pretty random result and very hard to predict. Still, the best players prevail in the long run. Backgammon champions are handicapped by the dice. Most matches are decided by the dice-one of the weaker players in the field can win a tournament on a given day or weekend, but enough matches are decided by skill that the best players prevail in the long run.
Backgammon tournaments are not that different from handicap golf tournaments and are likely less random. If one is allowed, the other should be as well
