1. It's tempting to make the 5pt but I think the right idea is to run here with 21/14. We're ahead in the race and our biggest problem is our vulnerable pair of stragglers. Placing one of them in front of White's stripped midpoint reduces the risk of an attack and furthers our game plan.
2. 20pt, 4pt, or hit? There are boldness indicators here, but ATS we should probably strive for non-gammonish positions. I make the 20pt despite being somewhat behind in the race; I think it wins the most.
3. 24/15* is the obvious play, but it leaves us rather vulnerable to getting attacked. Some alternatives are 24/18 6/3, 11/5 8/5, and 8/2 6/3. We trail in the race and we don't want to get gammoned. I think 11/5 8/5 is the strategically right idea, building our board in preparation for a later hit.
4. At 3a5a we should be somewhat cautious with the cube, but I don't think White can take this. D/P.
5. Our gammon value is slightly reduced by not by all that much, and the gammon race is close. Both 1/off(4) and 4/3*/2 1/off(2) leave 12 immediate blotting rolls so 1/off(4) should be better; putting White on the bar doesn't seem to gain a whole lot here. Similarly 4/3*(3) 1/off doesn't seem to offer any advantages over 1/off(4). The final alternative is the DMP play of 4/3*(2) 4/2, with only 5 immediate blotting rolls. I think the extra 4 checkers off should be worth the extra 7 blotting rolls. 1/off(4).
