Daily Quiz 5/17

1. 21/14, passing up the 5pt and the 5prime to partially run a checker. The reasons are that Blue is ahead in the race, is out of time and has two men out of play on the ace, while White has a flexible well-timed position. Blue cannot afford to just stay back and let White play freely. 21/14 tries to spring one and if it does not succeed it will work as distraction.
2. 13/7*. The hit is better than the 4pt in the opening, more so here where 8/4 6/4 strips badly. The other alternative 24/20 22/20 seems not necessary, White isn't well positioned for an attack, and 13/7* also helps the back men in removing the PoH possibilities for the next roll.
3. 24/15*. Staying back with one isn't the best way to get the shots Blue need. By hitting now, Blue pulls ahead in the race for now, and while he has the more blots, he has some points too, and could well hold his own in a hitting contest. White's many stripped points aren't that easy to play from from the bar either.
The score may be relevant here, counting towards the more gammonish hit, but I think Blue must still play backgammon.4. ND/T. With the anchor and good board White will always have play, and many of Blue's good variations yield so many gammons that I ND this on Stick's rule even if -3,-5 is not within the prescribed score range.
5. 1/0(4). It seems obviously better to try the relatively safe pigging play 4/*/2 1/0(2) over the meek 4/3*(2) 4/2. But it seems even better to try 1/0(4), 2 more checkers off may well bring 15% more gammons, and while I estimate 3 or 4 more hits, fewer of the hit scenarios will be losses, as Blue then has so many off (Of course in this case the Gammon will be lost, so the gammon gain will not be so great either). Still think it is worth it.
