i've have a love/hate relationship (mostly love) with this game for 30 yrs. like you there have been many times when i've become frustrated at my lack of improvement and quality of my play, and in those times what has helped me regain focus is to take a break from the game. over the years 'ive had flirtations with chess, go, bridge and othello but always come back to BG.
about a year ago i had an epiphany. after watching players (both live and online) better than me including giants of the game get spanked by lesser mortals, lose because of the most ridiculous sequence of dice imaginable etc. i came to the conclusion, that no matter how good you are you are not going to win every match, and with that insight i stopped caring if i won or lost. and since ive stopped caring, 'ive actually started doing better (go figure!) i've seen my PR go from low double digit/high single digits to the 5-6 range and my FIBS rating jumped over 150 pts. while i realize there is still room for improvement, i'm enjoying the game more and less stressed out when things dont go as well.
