However, it's a 9 year old match - back then even strong players could make ERs of more than 2.0 in "simple" matches.

I often read you having an opinion about a match being "easy" thus the resulting PR not carrying much weight. I get your point and agree that there are easy peasy matches, and tough ones. (A little like in the old ER days where the guy loosing from the bar always outperformed the match winner!).

But I've thought about what constitutes an easy match. Is that something specific? Or will it vary from player to player? Depending on "style" and knowledge of the game, on "experience" or rather just playing strength?

It's a bit interesting to the degree, that if there are patterns, it could be used in the next generation of bots, to provide more realistic UI profiles, exploit lesser skilled players, but also to rate players better.

So - what makes a difficult match for you, compared to a long yawn? A game with early 65s and not much contact I guess would be "easy" - however, some players would find it difficult to bear in correctly (spreading in the outfield), but even so the error-rate loss will be limited, since there are not so much to swing from one running play to the other. Calculating correct double-decisions will also be fairly easy for the skilled player, as where the not-so-strong player can really mess up in a very long and even race with many decisions that are "close" (the kind of missed double, missed double, missed double... ones). Or then again, a hopeless matchscore can stir things up quite a bit, even in a simple game.
