It is not only the race, the race is a factor of course, but not that key here. The problem with the third checkers are (in no particular order):
- Vulnerability for attack
- Lack of mobility
- Added to the frontloaded character of the forward position, the third checker backs add to the difficulty in building a front position (6s go deep or give up midpoint).
If you put the third checker on the 22, the attack danger is gone, and it will be easier to spring the checker. Probably a small drop still. If you put it on the 24, it is less in danger and less blocked, less of a drop than on the 23, more of course than if it is on the 22. So it is not just the race. Now put it on the mid (added benefit that you can hit immediately from the mid without giving up the midpoint), and it is a take. Give white back the 10 pips, and I guess so that the race advantage is the same as in the original, and I guess still a take (a bit concerned about the lack of instant offense though).
