One thing I spend a lot of time doing is going over the same positions again and again. These might be positions in books, or positions from my own games that I've gotten wrong and written down in notebooks. I find that if I haven't looked at a set of positions for a while, I'm almost guaranteed to get some of them wrong again, sometimes making the same mistake I made before, and sometimes making a new and different mistake. There are a couple of advantages that this technique has from a motivational point of view. The first is that progress, as measured by how many problems I get right, is much more reliable. After enough iterations, I will eventually get all or almost all the decisions right. (In contrast, every time I play a fresh match, I'm confronted with new decisions and it's not very predictable how well I'll do.) The second is that eventually I get bored and get motivated to play the bot again.
