My point being, is, the formula works with any of the above, if you get the adjustments right. EPC indicates a 7.2 diff in wastage compared to my 7.5 and your 7/8.
Is your estimate correct? If it is then the Kleinman estimate of 72.5 is way off (see below)!

Kleinman technique makes assumptions about variability in the number of rolls to bear off and here the leader with many checkers on low points has lower variability than a position with the same EPC in which let's say all the checkers were on the 4,5,6 points. This helps the leader. I've noticed that crediting his lead with an extra pip is about the right adjustment in this position type.
