Confidence level low for all these problems.

1. I am not afraid of a blitz cube here. Let’s take our chance now for an anchor, while the game is young. Scoot up with the ace for possible return shots against the 8-point or to anchor on the deuce in some lines. Bar/20, 24/23.

2. What are our priorities here? I don’t know. 13/5(2) looks great except that it puts no pressure on White. He will have complete freedom to hit aces, hit or anchor with a 6 or anchor with a 5. I’d prefer to at least give White some bad rolls. 6/2*(2) for sure, and either 18/10 or 13/9(2). 13/9(2) does duplicate 6’s. Hmm, would white anchor or hit with a six? On the other hand, 18/10 puts tremendous pressure on White to anchor or hit from the bar. I’ll go with 6/2*(2), 18/10.

3. A money rule of thumb states you hit loose in these types of positions, as long as the opponent doesn’t have a 5 point board. So despite White’s scary offensive position, I’d hit loose for money. Did I make that up or is this in fact true? Even if true, the match score may make a difference. I don’t know the gammon value, but would assume it is lowered given the large match lead. So I’d guess 8/1* is wrong here. Another idea is 8/6, 8/3 leaving no immediate shots and hoping to get lucky and pound him next roll. On the other hand, any 6 but 6-6 leaves a shot next time. That doesn’t seem right either. 13/8, 13/11 leaves only two jokers and almost wraps up the game if missed. I’ll try that. 13/8, 13/11.

4. Playing with a lead is always tricky. Scoreboard double, as White can almost never redouble and a gammon would be super-sweet, but as Ray Fogerlund advises we must play with “controlled fear.” I still take. Double / Take.

5. What was that about “controlled fear?” I am trembling even as I write this. My first instinct is to shout “Allah Akbar,” that I didn’t get gammoned and move on to the next game. 17/13. Let’s think a bit. Making the point 8/5, 6/5 is obviously the best way to win. Just how likely is that gammon? No idea. Will be interested to hear the answer. 15 five’s plus 6-2 for 17 immediate hitters when you might hit back or you might pop back in or you might hit. On the other hand, even if White misses, how long will you keep dangling that blot out there? 6-1, 4-2 and 4-3 are a bit ugly, everything else seems to at least play. I will stick with the give up the ghost play, 17/13.
