The count we keep is not an absolute count, it's is a relative count. In other words as in the diagram below keeping count as Blue I'm -4 before the roll. That's all that is in my head, -4, not 159/163. After the roll is played 24/14* by my opponent I will lose 10 pips for the roll itself and 14 pips from the checker being hit or a total of 24 pips so I go from -4 to +20 (-4 + 24). When a checker is hit you always lose the amount of pips equal to the point you were on from your opponent's perspective.
