Running Count

In Response To: Running Count (Liam)

I haven't actually practiced keeping a running count myself, but here's a simple fact that may help when there's a hit. If you hit your opponent's checker, figure out which of your points the blot was on, and add that to your opponent's pip count. For example, if you hit a blot on your 11pt, add 11 to your opponent's pip count. Similarly, if you have a blot on your opponent's 20pt that gets hit, add 20 to your pip count.

The important thing of course is that the position of the blot must be measured from the opponent's perspective. It's natural to think of a checker on my own 5pt as being "on the 5pt," but for the purposes of pip counting, it should be thought of as being on the (opponent's) 20pt.
