In Response To: The right way to measure which player played better in a match (Leonardo Jerkovic)

>MWC is the most logical solution in MATCHES...EMG is superbe for learning your mistakes in every part of the match...but blunder at 9away-9away can cost less then an error in DMP..it's the fact

Exactly! The difference in MWC together with the difference in luck, also expressed in MWC, will completely "explain" the outcome of the match (assuming all bot numbers are accurate). And that answers Tim's original question about measuring which player played better in a given match.

EMG is useful as a study tool. What were my "biggest" mistakes in the game? As Leonardo says, it squishes the size of the same error at DMP versus at 9 away-9 away. But EMG has lots of issues too. Jeremy has written on this before. For example, I believe it over-squishes at DMP. My checker play error rate at DMP is MUCH lower than at earlier scores (and expressed in MWC, is obviously much higher than at other scores).

A question that Tim did not ask, but seems to emerge from the thread: What is the best way of comparing players? People talk about a Giant as a 2.0 player. Is this a better measure than the ELO ratings that are starting to appear on USBGF for ABT tournaments?
