1) I'll play 24/20 18/13. Blue is ahead in the race and this escapes a man and positions one to escape. Meanwhile White has two men stuck behind a four prime. When this play works, it works pretty well. There are nine shakes that poh, but I'll live with that. The loose hits are fine with me since white is outboarded.

2) I'm shy about pushing the cube against a backgame (what's the rule of thumb? Wait until you have three points to clear before doubling a backgame?) But in this situation I think there's enough gammon threats to tip the balance in favor of pushing the cube. If we send another checker back or cover the homeboard blot we might have lost our market.

White has good timing, but the 4-1 backgame structure is weak. I'll say it's a take, but I'd probably just reset the checkers OTB. D/T

3) Pointing on white's head is the obvious move, but it still leaves us almost 40 pips behind in the race with a blocakde that's like swiss cheese. Mobility and pure play are the watchwords for backgames, and the hitting play serves neither. 23/13 aims directly at the bar point so it should be better. Then there's 23/17 6/2* which gets a runner moving and whacks a blot. But I don't think the hit is good for timing. 23/17 8/4 strips the 8 point when we want to use that checker to make the bar. So I'll go with 23/13

4) 22/13 looks alluring, but we're behind in the race so running isn't the best approach. I'll make the 5 point here. How wrong can it be to make your five point? 11/5 8/5

5) Is this too good? Are there twice as many gammons as single point losses? White needs 13 crossovers to make it home but will probably manage to make a several before being closed out so I'm not seeing it being particularly gammonish. OTOH, it seems like white has to pass this one, and blue will still have a cash next roll. I'll take another shake and see what happens. TG/P
