I read all this thinking you were going to get to backgammon at the end, but then saw that you had labeled the post "OT". I agree with your point, and will add something about BG that I believe is comparable.

I heard a debate going on in Chicago as to whether we will see a player with an average ER/PR of 2.5 in the next five years or so. One Giant started the argument by stating that we would, and another Giant said no, we won't, and furthermore that there is no need to look into the future--why not consider the past five years instead?

There is a very good reason to look into the future instead, and that is the better "training equipment" that is available now. Five years ago I was letting Snowie run long 2-ply rollouts overnight, and now XG flies through them on this quad-core while I type maybe two paragraphs of notes. I can study 1000s of matches by other players, archived online at various sites, any time I want, and prepare for tournaments by reviewing new, reliable books and Website articles. So can you, and anyone else who cares to improve their game quickly and surely.

I don't have an opinion on whether we will see a player with a reliable 2.5 ER/PR in the next five years, but I have no doubt whatever that we will have more people closer to that benchmark five years from today than we have now, or did have five years ago.
