"Creative" is a subjective label that is in the eye of the observer, if that is what you are coming at. But that doesn't make it meaningless.
In backgammon, showing creativity would mean switching autoplay off and finding a play that has some value although it contradicts one's learned principles of play. As a corollary, the less principles of play one knows, the more creative one is likely to be. The problem is of course to estimate what it means for a play to "have some value", because that doesn't require it to be correct. Which means that "creative play" can easily work as an euphemism for "blunder".
Example :
- DMP : Pre-bot player X plays 41S - 21$ because although he "knows" that it is bad to slot into a double shot unless the alternatives really suck, he notices that being hit is less serious at DMP, that there is a hell of a duplication going on, that he will need to have something when the opponent closes the 5-point, and X feels like trying something new. I think most would agree that X has been creative.
- DMP : I play 41S - 21$ because I remember the rollout on Stick's site. I am certainly not being creative !
