I think there are some players like that -- and I think the likelihood of such behavior increases with recorded and/or broadcast matches. So, yes, some would rather play a lower PR and lose rather than play a higher PR and win. Apparently, they find comfort in knowing that even if they lose they can fall back on the excuse of having 'played better'.
Rather small sample, but interesting results. Two points: My initial reaction is that I think match play, with the added complexities of cube decisions, would be more relevant to my comment (perhaps I was not at all clear in that regard). Further, I think we can assume there is some quantity of those cubes -- following jokers, etc. -- that are not 'efficient' (as you've defined and I concur with) and are clear drops. If we assume ten percent of the cubes are in this category then 32/45 (71.1%) are takes and if we assume as many as twenty percent of the cubes are in this category then 32/40 (80%) are takes. Obviously, not "almost every one", but certainly a considerable majority. In my opinion, certainly enough to swing advantage to the substantially inferior player against a Giant playing the style of a mind-numbed robot.
