I think Stick's sluuuurp post was very good. I think it is a good idea to look at how the numbers play if you have the 1, 3, 5 and 6 points left, with two cases: all spares high, and all spares on the ace. Check how often you blot, and how many checker you have off when you blot.

This is part of the story, I think making the bar also creates a point that is hard to clear, but the effect on spare positioning is also important.

I am pretty sure that making the bar is bad, but am not sure about what is the best way to handle this (I suck at bearing in against single anchors and backgames).
