BQ: Making the 5 point is obvious?

JSD > 4 only for the 4th play.
Have a couple of questions.
1. Please explain more fully the concept of putting pressure on the 17 point checker by moving up to the 23 point. I see now there is a direct 6, but notice that piece now has more pressure on *it*. I would expect an exchange of hits would not hurt White too much, so do not understand why putting pressure on the 17 is important.
2. Slotting the 9 point, with a view towards either extending the prmime or rolling it forward looked like good bet. I figured that if I made the 5 prime on the next roll, the position would be very solid, especially given the close race. So, don't see why this is the inferior play to the "pressure" play.
