You're worried that White will hit Blue's 23pt blot with a 6? This is not something Blue is too worried about because Blue doesn't lose too much by getting hit there.

In general, if you're in danger of getting hit, it is often good to give yourself a good 6 from the bar. In some variations, 23/17* is a good 6 from the bar for you.

Also it's easier to escape from the 23pt than from the 24pt when the opponent's 8pt has been broken.

Making a five-prime would be nice but there aren't that many rolls that give you the five-prime.
