A good golfer is a golfer who can repeat his swing and hit consistent shots. (the hallmark of a good swing is simplicity which makes it easy to repeat)
In the early 90s, Ian Woosnam was perhaps the best player on the planet (definetely among the top echelon of players at the time). I remember him partnering Nick Faldo in the foursomes in the Ryder Cup and they get into a situation where Faldo advises Woosie to hit a low fade up against the wind. Woosie replied "I can't do that". Woosie was only able to hit a draw but this one shot still enabled him to reach great results because he could repeat it. To boot, he was considered on of the naturals on tour. (if my memory serves me right this Ryder Cup episode happened at Kiawah Island).
I agree that golf equipment has undergone a tremendous development during the last couple of decades. But I don't buy your conclusion that today's good golfers should be lesser golfers than those golfers who weren't blessed with today's technology.
