In Response To: Woods's total driving rank (Christian Munk-Christensen)

I just played in Greece (Rhodos) last week a few rounds. Let me be fair, I got more bounce there than you will get at home on a course with actual grass on the fairways!! ;-)

Poorly executed swing might sound worse than it is - but you know the difference between the real true hits that you can feel on the club-face, and the ones that are not just there 100%.... And I still have that little rusty feeling in most of my swings after the break, just a tad off - little less drive in the lower body, a little out of balance compared to what it used to be, and a little more stiff joints, felt particular on the top of the backswing.

Regarding the balata balls, you're absolutely right. The spun a heck of a lot more. Which is somewhat a part of my point. The new balls don't spin as much, making it harder to produce some shots. Making the drives go longer and straigther. It would also make it more difficult to stop the ball on the greens, but it seems that the wedges, club surfaces and grooves have improved to even things out.

So, the additional spin I'm talking about, is if you compare to the old clubs/grooves with the same balls. Because if you play balata balls (I also found a few BTW :-) ) you're in trouble on a lot of your other shots compared to todays std.

Some years ago I red that Tiger was playing a special Nike ball - not available to the public - that was more close to balata performance, to get more spin sacrificing a little distance. I don't know if he still play such balls?

My rounds on Rhodos (the first real rounds after my break - Rhodos is a fairly long Par 74, you lay up on fairways due to conditions): 80, 78, 79, 81, 78 - and the problem was chipping/putting - the greens were ridiculous slow...

I uploaded one of the shots I'm talking about to you-tube, it was captured on my phone - it's late in the round, I'm a bit tired and hit a 3-wood. It was not a 100% hit, but it did go to the middle of the fairway at 285 yards. You can judge the swing yourself:

You have played long enough to recall the feeling of persimmon drivers. You know the balls you hit just between the screws in the insert, felt like carving butter. And the ones you mis-hit just a quarter of an inch outside that sweet spot, you were not in doubt and you could see the difference in the resulting trajectory/distance. That's what I'm talking about. Today's drivers with the volume of a pint and the surface of a football field, you have more room to play with before it affects the shot...

Anyway, I probably make it all sound a bit worse than it is - I'm just in a bit of a nostalgic mood I suppose :-)
