I think what I most seriously misjudged were the gammons. When Yellow rolls well, the gammon threat is very serious since Black has two blots, five checkers back, and sometimes is forced to break his board. On the other hand, even if Black hits a shot right away, he has a lot of work to do to win a gammon. He has a lot of checkers to scoot around still, and again he might have to break his board. After Yellow enters she might even counterattack and turn the game around.
I didn't really see all this at first and intuitively overestimated Black's gammons and underestimated Yellow's gammons.
