I don't remember having seen that caveat written anywhere, but I like it. If nobody objects, I'll add the "no dead spares" clause to the definition of zone next time I write or update a glossary.

The concept of the zone is usually applied to the opening and early middle game (where the existence of dead spares would be unlikely) but it seems reasonable to me to expand the definition to exclude dead spares.
