Just typed it up.

It may sound strange, but if you inverse the order it becomes very difficult to recognize because it messes up the melody of the name. My Chinese name is Fan Dehua, and if anyone uses that anywhere I will react. If you instead say Dehua Fan, I would miss it completely. Actually in most cases people called me Mr. Casper, Xiao Fan (young Fan), Lao Fan (old Fan) or Fan Xiansheng (Mr. Fan). Nobody would call me Dehua, given names are not used like that in Chinese, if they want to use it, then they use the full name, Fan Dehua.

The Chinese (and other Asians that use the different order) will use the order in which you present your name yourself, and in same cases they will clarify how they should call you, so it would be common for them to clarify 'So we can call you Mr. David?' Just 'David' would then again be hard to use for most Asians unless they know you really well.
