Jim Vernon is also quoted in the article, explaining that the last 5-7 years, driving accuracy has been more or less unimportant, compared to earlier where it was just as vital as putting.

I've heard elsewhere, a couple of years ago, that a large statistical examination of PGA data was carried out to measure the "cost" of hitting 1st cut rough or deep rough. While it "used to be" that a drive missing the fairway on average should cost a good player about half a stroke, it was now more to the tune of a quarter of a stroke! Due to equipment (grooves in particular).
