Chuck:
I'm all for clocked breaks to keep up according to schedule. I think you might have misunderstood my previous post and what I'm objecting to.
In my first post in this thread I provided an alternative suggestion that no one commented on. 5 minute timer (hourglass style). When time is up and only one player is back, he can start the clock. Similar to chess matches when you are late. I even suggested this feature built into digital clocks.
You said that you'd happily accept extra time instead of breaks (which I read as you would play better overall). Why would your opponent think that is a good and fair idea?
In a tournament one player may have waited 45 minutes for a match, while his opponent have played a long enduring match against a slow player. He gets no or minimal break between rounds. Clearly they will have a different need for breaks in their match, and why should they not get even time for playing? It all comes back to a discussion if a break is needed, chosen, luxury, fair, etc. Because we can all find examples where it could be fair to deduct from play time, and some where its not. By keeping a separate break time you don't have to distinguish.
You could use the same line of thinking for the in between time to reset the board between games? Keep the time running to make sure the player speeds up. No, I don't think so?
