How rare is this?

Perhaps so. Not having played much tennis, and then only decades ago, I'll take your word. But there are worlds of difference. Generally similar speeds of all components are in play. In baseball, you have a round ball being struck by a round bat -- with the diameter of the bat being roughly identical to that of the ball; in tennis, you have a round ball being struck by a flat surface -- with the area of the flat surface being significantly larger than the diameter of the ball. More importantly, in my opinion, a baseball and a baseball bat are, comparatively, much less compressible than a tennis ball and the strings on a tennis racket. The deformations of the tennis ball and the tennis racket provide a comparatively longer period of impact and the relative sizes of the tennis ball and the racket, as contrasted with the baseball and the bat, would both seem to enhance the possibility of a 'double hit' in tennis. Driving a golf ball might be more analagous to tennis. The flat, deformable face of a driver is not considerably larger than that of the somewhat compressible golf ball. I've never seen, or heard of, a 'double hit' using a driver off of a tee. I also played racquetball for a number of years, a number of years ago, when the racquet was not nearly as large as today; I do not recall ever 'double hitting' a ball.
