Not a scientific answer, but an observation

The pitch was a breaking pitch from a left handed pitcher, curving into the right-handed batter's wrists as he swung. The angle of the pitch and the angle of the bat caused the ball to ride the bat a little longer than normal before elevating slightly above it. I would likely have been a swinging bunt, had he not reconnected. Tulowitski has tremendous power and bat speed and he was able to follow through and reconnect with the slightly elevated ball. It is rarely seen because very few times do the angles of the pitch and the angle of the bat upon contact cause the ball to ride the bat as long and very few players have the ability to power through the swing when it happens. This same type of double-hit happens frequently in golf on a wedge shot.
