Not a scientific answer, but an observation

In golf this usually occurs when the club gets caught by grass or sand and the follow-through is delayed. The ball is hit farther to the left than intended as a result of the club face having turned due to the the obstruction of the grass or sand. As the club head re-accelerates the ball is in the path of the club face and is re-hit. This seems very similar to what happened in the baseball game, he was jammed on the wrists and his swing was delayed, the ball moved up and to the left a little and as his bat re-accelerated he reconnected with it. In golf, it can also happen when the ball does not come off the club face with the intended compression and speed and when the club re-accelerates after being delayed by something it catches up with the ball.

When a ball is hit twice on one swing in golf, it counts as two strokes.
