If you look at the video you will see the awkward contact slows the bat down and deadens the ball. This happens because the pitch was breaking in towards him and he did not make good contact, similar to what happens on a a swinging bunt, except with his strength he was able to continue the swing and re-connect with the ball. The awkward contact that slowed his bat initially seems very similar to the golf swing that is slowed by grass and results poor contact with the ball and in a ball that is lifted up and to the left and then re-hit as the club head clears the grass and regains momentum. In this case, Tulowitski's swing was slowed by the awkward angle at which he made contact and then the ball, which was lifted up and to the left, was re-hit when he powered through the swing.
