All tournaments should use this

In Response To: compenstation for antibyes in a single elimination tournament (Bob Koca)

I think all tournaments should employ Bob's playoff methodology. Tournaments could use his methodology regardless of the number of entrants, if byes were also incorporated. The goal of a director should be to limit the number of first-round byes, although, steps should be taken to prevent a player from getting two byes in the same tournament, if possible. Making a player that received an earlier bye ineligible to get a bye in the playoffs does not diminish his equity, but prevents him from having an overwhelming advantage over the other competitors in the glory departments, tournament wins and ABT and USBGF points.

Using the 'magic' number of qualifiers for the playoffs as either 3,4,5,6 or 7, the following chart can be used (3.6 = 3 or 6 qualifiers, director's choice):

As you can see, the number of byes is kept small, averaging less than 4 byes for events with 64 or fewer players.

When the number of byes on the chart is large, such as 15 when there are 65 contestants, a better plan may be to give anti-byes. In that case, 2 anti-byes would be given, rather than 15 byes. In cases where the byes are large, a much smaller number of anti-byes can be used instead. The purpose is to put the most number of people on an even footing at the start of the tournament. The problem with anti-byes is they can cause a bracket to lag behind the others, but their use requires the same number of total rounds to complete the tournament as using byes. A player that receives an anti-bye and reaches the playoffs, should be awarded a bye, if one or more is available. Perhaps the anti-byes should be drawn first and begin their matches right away, while the rest of the draw is taking place. This could actually be the most timely and efficient way or running an event. All players would be told that they must be available either in the playing room or by phone one hour prior to the posted playing time so they can be notified of an anti-bye, should they receive one, and begin play ahead of the rest of the field.
