I think we need to create a nice big list of games widely accepted by parents for play by their children that contain "random elements" and take the position that backgammon belongs in that list. The game of Poker is different in that the betting is an inseparable part of the game and is in fact where nearly all of the skill lies.
Parchesi, Trouble, Monopoly, Risk, Scrabble, Candyland, Life, Go Fish, etc. All games with elements of chance. All games that parents find acceptable and play with children. Many are games with far less skill and educational value than backgammon. The first two are relatives of Backgammon.
