In Response To: Explaining Ray's Incredible Success (Stick)

The three phrases you note do not occur in my statement in the order, nor the proximity, that you've presented them. I think you have inferred player specificity that was not intended to be implied.

The statement "the player that only chases elusive perfection in his PR neglects other significant aspects of the game, to his detriment (and to his illusion, delusion, and frustration)" did not refer to a specific player(s) but to the hypothetical, generic player of a specific type.

That being said, I do think there are players who do not win nearly as much, or as consistently, as some might predict by their consistently low PRs. They do not win as much as others might predict or, certainly, as much as they themselves would anticipate. Whether or not that is a result of the hypothetical condition described above, I do not know.

Two that come immediately to mind in my sphere of familiarity are Stick and Petko -- I think it a measure of respect that they do come immediately to mind. I have the greatest appreciation for each as excellent players, I regard each as good friends, and I consider each a wonderful ambassador of the game. However, I do not think I am out of line, nor do I think I offend, by saying that neither wins as much as might be expected -- least of all as expected by themselves. I'm sure others can note other players, around the globe, with similar experiences. Certainly, we can all note the converse as well, whereby less skilled or less experienced players have inexplicably secured a tournament championship, or championships. Some may assign me to that category.

I don't know the reasons; however, I do know there are many aspects, misfortune being one of them -- I'm sure one or two different rolls in given matches would have resulted in tournament wins for both.

I do remain steadfast in my opinion -- and I don't specifically assign this attribute to Stick or to Petko -- that the pursuit of PR perfection to the exclusion of other factors is counterproductive. Again, in my estimation, this explains, at least in large part, Ray's success.
