Explaining Ray's Incredible Success

In Pete's case, and I'm a huge Rose fan too, an argument can be made to temper the accomplishments because of the number of years, games, at bats, etc. -- and that is reasonable, Cobb hit a career .367. But, from another perspective, it is even more impressive that he was able to play at such a level for such a long time. 200 hits in a season is a milestone. A player entering the league today would have to have 200 hits in a season for 20 seasons (much longer than most careers) to approach Rose's hit record.
That's like comparing anyone else to Ruth's home run output. No one else is even close other than in absolute total. Aaron played forever (did he ever hit more than 40?). Bonds, McGuire, Sosa, and others were all juiced. Home runs in comparison to peers, per at-bat, etc. are all Ruth. Slugging percentage, on-base percentage, etc. are all Ruth. No one else is close by any number of measures, but his legacy is diminishing with time.
Other considerations: Ruth was a pitcher for several years. Today's player play longer seasons, etc.
