In Response To: Records are made to be broken !! Congrats Ray !! (neilkaz)

I knew before posting my first reply of the overly dramatic backlash I'd get from the jealousy claim to who knows what. The best move would have been to do the crowd head nod, type 'congrats Ray!', and move on with it. Either that or not posting at all is what I imagine the other bg Giants would have done ... I don't however see anything at all wrong with questioning how impressive Ray's new record is. I'm still hoping to hear from Neil on his attendance in 2005.

I wish that we had 100 Ray Fogerlunds. Well, let's be more specific, 100 people who showed up to tournaments like he does. It's good for the game and I'm sure a lot more people wish they had this freedom. If we did have more of him perhaps too we we would also be able to hold significantly more than 20 ABT tournaments a year. The game would be so popular that we could even hold events on the same weekend and not have attendance suffer at both events. Imagine a world where there were 48 ABT events a year or 4 every month! That would be great...however...

If this world did exist and someone was to break Neil's record within' that world I think more people would be questioning how much breaking that record is worth. 'Of course he broke the record, there are now 48 events, he goes to every damn one of them, he's a decent player, of course he'll eventually hit a streak that crushes the old record!' Yet me questioning the attendance factor here is a faux pas. As I said before, I have no idea if Ray has attended more, less, or the same amount of tournaments as Neil. All I could be doing is highlighting his feat and making it that much more impressive if Neil attended more events in 2005. There were 19 ABT events in 2005 and I'm only sure that Neil attended 7 of them. I'm sure attended more, how many more is my question. It won't take much for it to be the same amount as Ray.

Other points in this thread I'd like to reiterate or raise the question again to be answered:

  • From where do you get that Ray plays a 4 on average?
  • If a decent player shows up to enough tourneys he will get his results.
  • Backgammon in the short term is a game of mostly luck. Any given bg match is determined ~99% of the time by who was the luckiest. (assuming no astronomical difference in skill levels and standard ABT length matches)
  • Ray does not win a higher percentage of matches than :insert name here:. If this is true, wouldn't the attendance factor have to be the heaviest variable in his ABT points conquest?
  • I'd be honored to be remembered in the same light as Morphy and at least I'll have my own Wiki page.
