I am left wondering whether solving such puzzles does something for your BG skills.
I would say no. I've tried a few of these BG retrograde analysis puzzles (and even got one recently that Nack missed), but mostly I'm generalizing from my experience with chess, where I have spent a sizable amount of time solving retro problems. I can say confidently that solving retro problems does nothing for your OTB chess. Now, in BG, the situation is slightly different, because there are so many ways to reach any given position that to make the problem interesting, it's necessary to specify that the sequence be well-played. That means that BG retro problems have a little bit more to do with actual BG play, but only slightly. It's still not going to help your BG playing.
Having said that, I can imagine creating some BG puzzles involving forward visualization that might help with actual playing.
