"Williams played in a home park that did (does) not favor left-handed hitters, whereas Ruth played in a home park that was specifically designed to amplify the impact of his lefty power stroke. "
To decide who benefitted more by their home park the numbers to look at are Home Away breakdowns. And they really show you are far off base with your assertion above. I found this data at http://www.baseball-fever.com/archive/index.php/t-96563.html where the poster got it from Total Baseball.
Williams: HR at home = 248 HR on road = 273 Ruth: HR at home = 347 HR on road = 367
That blows the idea that Yankee stadium was the perfect HR park for Ruth out of the water. It did hurt Ruth less though than Williams.
What about the main percentage stats?
Williams BA at home = .361 BA on road .328 Ruth BA at home = .347 BA on road .338
Both better at home but Williams has a HUGE split here, Babe a small one.
Williams SA at home .652 SA on road .615 Ruth SA at home .699 SA on road .681
Again a much larger home advantage for Willaims.
Williams OBP at home .497 OBP on road .468 Ruth OBP at home .482 OBP on road .466
Again a much larger home advantage for Williams.
The argument that the overall skill level increaed significantly by William's time largely due to a larger pool of players has merit. I wonder how it could be quantified. And if so, certainly today the pool of players is much larger still. How would someone like Pujols then rank?
Another factor that has not been discussed is overall level of offence. certainly the year Babe outhomered almost every other team needs to be weighted more heavily somehow. But a super live ball era was active for much of his career. I don't know in the balance what that type of analyis would show.
