In Response To: How do you play this 53 and why? (pontiac)

I just realized that the roll in Pontiac's subject header (54) doesn't match the roll on the board (53). I'll treat the roll of 54 as an extra problem.

First, though a little digression:

1O ' ' ' '5X '3X2X ' '6O

 ' ' ' '2X5O '3O ' ' '3X

65R-44B-31

1O ' ' ' '5X '3X2X ' '5O

 ' ' ' '2X5O '3O1O ' '3X

65R-44B-31D

Regarding the left-hand position above, here is an excerpt from page 87 of Backgammon Openings:

"Slotting in front of an advanced anchor can be a powerful ploy. White faces a dilemma [in the right-hand position]: if she hits, she breaks her anchor and/or forgoes making an offensive point; if she fails to hit, [Blue] might cover the slotted point."

This concept can be applied to Pontiac's position below. With his subject header roll of 54, if Blue plays O (Outer, 13/9 8/3) and White does not hit, Blue can cover his 9pt blot or use it as a builder to make his 7pt or 9pt. If indeed O is better than A (8/3 6/2) for money, then it should also be better at Pontiac's trailing score of –5-4.

 ' '2O ' '5X2X2X1X ' '4O

 ' '1O2X '4O '4O ' ' '3X
