Although aces could be valuable to make the acepoint (sometimes on head), they are almost certainly valuable (when the full roll allows) to move a spare from the 6-point to the 5-point. Thus going out of our way to keep a spare on the 2-point isn't necessarily the right ploy.

If we just wanted to win simply (without concern for gammon wins) then getting down to 2 checkers on the 6-point might be best (although I'm not sure about even that). Here we value gammons. 6/4 evens up on the 6-point (and two highest points). After that safety play, we can now take some checkers off. We can still use the 2-point so ripping max doesn't look right. That leaves a tweener play (which are seldom right...) as my choice:

6/4, 2/0, 4/0 which is more cleanly stated 6/0, 2/0
