The Origin of Doubling

For those who don't track the ABT website or read Chicago Point I would point you to: http://www.chicagopoint.com/newdoublinginfo.html

Frank Frigo has unearthed a 1931 copy of Harpers Bazaar with a key article by Walter Richard entitled "The Backgammon Boom".

The long-held belief that doubling originated in the US is false. It was brought to New York in 1928 but it originated in the Traveller's Club in Paris in a game in 1926 between The Grand Duke Dmitri of Russia and Aksel de Wichfeld of Denmark.

For the full details and the origin of chouette see the link above.

Many thanks to Bill Davis for publishing it and solving one of backgammon's greatest mysteries.
