If you have a shot, you have to think before your roll, what number hits. You roll, voila, the number, no oversight.
I agree that (while shaking the dice, for example) it helps to multitask by looking (quickly) for your good numbers. However, if you don't re-evaluate AFTER the good number you were hoping for actually arrives, you will err the other way by occasionally missing an even better play. Thus it's a two-step process -- 1) anticipate what you will play, and 2) verify that there isn't, in fact, an even better move than the one you anticipated once the hoped-for roll appears.
