One possibility is to consult national rating systems.

There are about 600 and 200 players listed in the rating systems for Denmark and Japan respectively. The UK has about 1000.

The Larsen-Silliman rating list includes about 1100 players but includes many players from outside the USA and includes for a five year period. Perhaps the number of active American players (playing live over the last two years) is between 800-900 - that would be my best guess on scant data. You probably know this already.

Turkey and Iran with populations in the 90M range and where backgammon is general popular throughout their societies (albeit mostly in the tradition cubeless form) must have the potential for the greatest number of active players.
